The Purpose and Overview of this Role

Chaplains are the living expression of the Gospel and through TSA Chaplaincy Program they provide practical, emotional and spiritual support to individuals seeking assistance. Associate Prison Chaplains have a significant role in the delivery of The Salvation Army Chaplaincy program, partnering with Queensland Correctional Centres and the community.

The Associate Prison Chaplain enters a Correctional Service on a regular basis to provide Chaplaincy support at the request of the Chaplain, and subject to certain criteria being met. The role assists with supporting prisoners, offering consolation and encouragement, irrespective of their condition, their faith background and their crimes, without prejudice or judgement. It is the role of the Associate Prison Chaplain to support the prisoner through their own faith journey regardless of what that faith is within the framework of TSA’s mission, vision and values.

The Associate Prison Chaplain is an active member of a multi-denominational chaplaincy team and is rostered to attend the nominated correctional centre on a weekly basis. The Associate Prison Chaplain will also be rostered to lead an ecumenical Sunday Service in their assigned correctional centre every six weeks.

Multiple positions are available for this role in the following locations; The Gold Coast, Esk, North Ipswich, Brisbane, Beaudesert and Woodford

Qualifications and Experience Requirements for the Role

  • Commitment to the Christian faith.
  • Diploma of Chaplaincy or equivalent completed
  • Recognised pastoral care or ministry qualification  or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in pastoral care and/or pastoral counselling.
  • Current driver’s licence

Mandatory Requirements of the Role

  • Fully complete The Salvation Army’s Mission Volunteer registration process.
  • Complete TSA mandatory training and induction modules, and any other training as required
  • Willingness to undertake integrity checks (e.g. Criminal History Check) required by TSA and QCS (at the organisation’s expense)
  • Willingness to obtain a Blue Card
  • Willingness to attend mandatory screenings by QCS and attend annual State Chaplaincy Board in-service.
  • A practising member of a faith community.
  • Reliable transport to assigned correctional centre/s.

Time and Roster

  • Available 1 day per week or as agreed with Line Manager.
  • One Sunday every six weeks.
  • Maximum 12 hours per week
  • Due to the complexity of screening procedures and success of the role dependant on the applicants ability to create long relationships with prisoners, only those able to make a long term commitment should apply.
