About the program Brosnan Services (a branch of Jesuit Social Services) delivers the Leaving Care Mentoring program. Brosnan Services is a holistic support service for young people  who are assessed as high risk/need, with limited social and family networks, limited accommodation and post release support options and experiencing multiple and complex health problems.

The Leaving Care Mentoring program is aimed at providing extended community support to young people involved in the Child Protection system, who reside in residential or home based care and are soon to be transitioning into independent living. This is done through matching volunteers from the community with one of our young people for 12 to 18 months with the aim that the mentor and young person develop such a relationship that it will continue post the program.

About the role

Key responsibilities for this role include:

  • Provide mentoring support to young people who are leaving out of home care system
  • Encourage mentees to consider education, training and employment opportunities
  • Promote and increase a young person's community participation
  • Develop collaborative working relationships with young people and interested stakeholders
  • Provide appropriate level of supervision and support to young people
  • Keep and maintain an accurate journal
  • Participate in core training program and any other training deemed appropriate by the program coordinator

**Volunteer Requirements **

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Understanding and sympathy with the mission and ethos of Jesuit Social Services
  • Commitment and ability to work effectively with disadvantaged young people, their families and the community
  • Willingness to participate in 12 hours core training
  • Commitment of 12 months to the mentoring program
  • Capacity and willingness to work some weekends
  • Valid Working with Children Check Card

Successful Interview and Police Check Conducted by Jesuit Social Services prior to commencement
