Breakfast Club Assistant
Brotherhood of St. LaurenceLOCATION: Fitzroy
HOURS: Thursdays, 7:30am-9am
Summary of program and its objectives
The Breakfast Club was established in December 2001 by the Brotherhood of St Laurence in partnership with Sacred Heart School. The program operates each weekday during school terms at the Connie Benn Centre. It promotes and provides a healthy nutritious breakfast and a safe play environment for primary school children from the Atherton Gardens public housing estate and surrounding areas. The program is currently staffed by a coordinator, a team of corporate and community volunteers and high school students.
There is overwhelming evidence that children perform better at school if they have a healthy breakfast. A good breakfast gives children improved physical stamina, increased capacity to concentrate and learn and can reduce behavioural problems. Statistics suggest that around 40% of Australian children currently turn up to school each day without having eaten breakfast.
The Breakfast Club Assistant supports the daily running of the Breakfast Club program, under the direction of the Coordinator, to ensure a safe, engaging and enjoyable program and environment is provided for participants.
