  • Time frame: ongoing (minimum 12 months)
  • Time commitment  - 1 hour minimum per week/fortnight

The program Having good social connections is essential for all aspects of health, especially as we age. Red Cross Social Circles program supports older members of the community to be more independent, improve their wellbeing and social connection and remain living in the community. We do this by matching caring and friendly volunteers with an older person who is not in regular social contact with people. The visits that the volunteers make have an important impact on the older person’s life: enhancing their sense of wellbeing, supporting good physical and mental health, promoting healthy ageing and making them more resilient to life’s knocks and challenges.

The opportunity This role suits someone over the age of 18 who is a good listener and/or talker who can commit to one hour a week/fortnight for a social visit to an older person in their home where you might chat, reminisce, listen to music, read the newspaper, play cards or a board game, go for a walk or have a cuppa at a local cafe.

The impact As a Social Circles Volunteer, you’ll enhance the life of a vulnerable member of the community by offering them company and friendship. You’ll also enrich your own life by gaining satisfaction, enjoyment and personal development through your visits.  Red Cross will ensure you have training, ongoing support and access to other opportunities within the World’s largest humanitarian network.
