About the role Our long running School Food Gardens Program teaches primary school kids how to grow food, reduce food waste and act sustainably both at school and home. Originally a car park, this thriving food garden at Mother of God Primary School is now nine years old. Staffs are very engaged in the program, making links back in the classroom with some teachers cooking in class with the produce that is harvested from the garden. Under the direction of the School Food Garden Educator, the primary focus of the volunteer role is to support in the delivery of the weekly School Food Garden Program.

Key volunteer duties and responsibilities

  • Support in garden maintenance and development including fostering a productive food garden
  • Maintaining safe garden practices and promptly informing the School Food Garden Educator of any potential breaches of safety
  • Working with small groups of students in garden based activities

What we are looking for We are looking for volunteers who are enthusiastic about working with children and community and are passionate about increasing food security and nature connection. For this role we are looking for a minimum commitment of one school term. Other desirable criteria include:

  • Ability to develop good relationships
  • Flexibility, adaptability and initiative
  • Good interpersonal skills and able to communicate with people from a broad range of social backgrounds
  • A desire to foster curiosity and knowledge in children about growing food and the natural world.
