A core value of The Salvation Army ("TSA") is to support the basic needs of individuals experiencing disadvantage and communities in times of disaster.  The Gardening Assistant provides support to ensure the property is safe and enjoyable for all community members, staff, volunteers and Officers. The role helps to: maintain, develop and revive gardens; ensure that they are well presented; and the garden and its surroundings are maintained in a safe, tidy and aesthetically pleasing environment.

Attention and adherence to the appropriate protocols and policies is an important part of the role.  Safety and well-being of self and others is vital and there is a requirement to identify and report hazards and incidents when they occur.

Key Activities

• Weeding, mulching, planting, replanting, digging, potting and re-potting of plants·
• Mowing of lawns, pruning of hedges, clipping of plants
• Watering of lawns and garden beds
• Appropriate use of Personal Protection Equipment at all times
• Monitor and address any health and safety concerns within the premises

Quals/Experience Requirements for the Role

• Previous experience working in lawns and gardens preferred.
• Experience using a ride-on-mower and other gardening appliances is highly desired.
• A reasonable level of fitness to meet the inherent requirements of the role.

Mandatory Requirements of the Role

• Fully complete The Salvation Army's volunteer registration process.
• Current Criminal History Check (Police check) and other integrity checks may be required.
• Complete TSA induction modules and any other training as required.
