Starlight Express Room, Royal Children's Hospital

Starlight’s mission is to brighten the lives of seriously ill children, young people and their families. We do this through a number of Programs which our amazing Programs Volunteers help make happen.

What's a Starlight Programs Volunteer?**** Our Programs Volunteers are important members of the Starlight team. They’re a wonderful community of positive, committed people who share Starlight’s values, are great fun and love to help others. And you can join them! You’ll get to help in these 2 key programs:

  • Starlight Express Rooms: medical-free havens located in major paediatric hospitals around Australia, where you’ll work with Captain Starlight and help replace the pain, fear and boredom of a hospital visit with fun, joy and laughter.
  • Starlight Wishgranting: help make a seriously ill child’s once-in-a-lifetime Wish come true, which has a lasting impact on the whole family.

Sounds great! What **does it involve**? In hospital, you’ll be doing all sorts of things like crafts, video games, singing (no skill required!), dancing around the room (see previous note re skill!), chatting… you name it! You’ll also keep the room clean and tidy, welcome visitors and help with things like re-stocking the craft table. With Wishgranting, each Wish is made up of a number of tasks that need to be completed. These include things like helping a child come up with their perfect Wish, sourcing donations, or helping excited families navigate a busy airport before their dream holiday.

What’s the time commitment?  4 hours of volunteering each fortnight, for at least 12 months.

Will I be trained? Absolutely! Successful applicants receive complete on-boarding, training and support. We want you to have the best possible experience.

Anything else I should know?  Yes, and it’s important too! We’re committed to providing positive experiences in an environment that’s caring, nurturing and safe. Successful applicants will therefore undertake a Working With Children Check and a National Police Check.

We also have additional requirements:

  • You must be aged 18 or older to apply
  • Successful applicants will need to comply with our Safeguarding Children and Young People Policy and Vaccination policy
  • We ask that volunteers commit to 4 hours of volunteering each fortnight, for at least 12 months.

Further, Starlight's vision for reconciliation is to embed values of awareness, acknowledgement and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and their culture within our organisation. We welcome applications from people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage.

Interested? If this ad has you feeling excited about using your skills to make a difference, we’d love to hear from you! When submitting an application on this site you will receive a message with a website link to our Starlight website to apply directly through there!

Applications close on Monday 17 February, 2020. Take that first step and start something special.

You can not apply for this role as it is no longer available.
