The Boroondara Volunteer Resource Centre is advertising this role on behalf of Boroondara General Cemetery.

The Boroondara Cemetery founded 160 years ago and has more than 80,000 interments. Memorials fulfill a very important role in capturing the history of the time and lives of those buried within the cemetery grounds. This project role involves photographing and cataloging family memorials.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • This project involves photographing defined sections, marking of as you go
  • Checking the accuracy of the location against the burials recorded for each position (computer database)
  • Downloading the photos which include imbedded GPS coordinates
  • Naming the files to match the designated approved naming protocol and backing everything up

Skills and Experience:

  • Commitment of time on a regular basis during Cemetery Office hours
  • Discretion sand confidentiality required due to access to confidential records
  • Must be able to work behind the scenes in a sometimes busy office with active Funeral Services being delivered
  • Ability to use an automatic purpose built camera
  • Basic literacy and computer skills

Benefits: We are undertaking a project to capture each monument as of day in order to preserve the record and potentially make deceased searches much easier for families local, interstate and abroad.

This task does not require any special photographic expertise. The camera is very simple and very easy to operate and fully automatic. Each of the burial positions are individually mapped. The project involves photographing defined sections. Marking off as you go. Then checking the accuracy of the location against the burials recorded for each position (on computer database). Downloading the photos which include imbedded GPS coordinates. Naming the files to match the designated approved file naming protocol and backing everything up. It will require a commitment of time on a regular basis during cemetery Office hours but there is flexibility with how many days and how many hours - even how many volunteers. As there is potential access to confidential records discretion and confidentiality are required. Additionally you must be able to work behind the scenes in a sometimes busy office with active Funeral Services being delivered.
