About Pets of the Homeless Pets Of The Homeless (POTH) help keep vulnerable people and their pets together by alleviating the burden of providing essential pet care during times of hardship. We believe that the companionship and the therapeutic value of pets is immeasurable and nothing should come between a loving owner and their pet. Not homelessness. Not financial hardship. Not domestic violence. Pets are family – and nothing should stand in the way of that.

About the Role POTH is seeking an energetic, well-connected and committed Director with Human Resources (HR) experience and an interest in human and animal welfare to join its voluntary Board of Directors. As POTH is a relatively young organisation, the Board consists of ‘working’ Directors who commit a generous amount of time to optimise the performance of POTH and ensure compliance with legal requirements. Board members are expected to attend six Board meetings and six Strategy meetings each year at POTH headquarters in Cheltenham held on Sundays, attend major fundraising events, donate time to support delivery of initiatives (where required), and advocate and actively help raise funds for POTH.

Key Responsibilities The role includes but is not limited to:

  • Application of knowledge and experience to advise Board on HR-related matters, as well as contributing to the overall organisation strategy
  • Working closely with the founder/CEO to ensure Board agreed HR-related activities are completed as per agreed timelines
  • In conjunction with the founder/CEO, be the public face of the Board when required (e.g. to volunteers, employees, and wider community)

Desired Skills, Experience & Attributes

  • Strong knowledge and experience in strategy, operations and administration related to HR, including strategic planning, recruitment and retention, employee and volunteer relations, legal & financial/tax compliance and requirements, best practice HR management and policies, and all aspects related to the employee/volunteer life cycle in an organisation.
  • Previous experience with Boards, understanding of corporate governance, and proven leadership/management skills
  • Effective communicator and collaborator, strong attention to detail, good commercial acumen
  • Passionate about Pets Of The Homeless’ mission, and human and animal welfare issues generally

Time Commitment:

  • Monthly two hour face-to-face attendance at Board/Strategy meetings held on a Sunday at POTH’s headquarters in Cheltenham
  • Attendance at POTH’s major fundraising events (approx. 1-3 events per year)
  • Own time required to complete the key responsibilities outlined above

What you can look forward to:

  • The opportunity to shape and grow POTH as it positions itself to become a major player in this NFP space
  • Work with like-minded and passionate professionals dedicated to making a real difference for the people and animals we support and the wider community
