Purpose of Role Volunteer musicians required to teach newly arrived young refugees, mainly from Syrian backgrounds (810-14/ 14-18/ 18-25 y/o) to learn to play the piano. The Australian Syrian Charity’s music program is one of the programs that empowers and builds the capacity of newly arrived families of refugees, mainly from Syria, to settle in Australia. The ASC music program aims to provide weekly one on one piano lessons for around 30 students. The students would also participate in occasional community performances such as parades, and\or holiday celebrations, as will the program’s marching band. Our intention is to create a rotating roster of volunteer music teachers who will follow a set music program syllabus set out by the ASC Music Coordinator, to ensure the continuity and quality of the classes. In return, we offer you the chance to make a real difference in the lives of refugee families who are new to the Melbourne community. The piano lessons are  a wonderful opportunity for everyday Australians to establish a connection with the Australian-Syrian community, and to help the kids to feel more comfortable living here in this country. Music has healing qualities, and this is your chance to share that gift, while saying "welcome"! We can also offer you an official certificate indicating the hours you have volunteered as a music teacher. Music can heal the memories. Through music and building relationships the relationship with Australians can help participants to feel better here in Australia. This position will require a Working with Children Check and Police check.

Key Responsibilities

• Teach piano to beginners, on a weekly basis.
• Liaise with the Music Coordinator and other music teachers regarding the program and provide input on what is attainable.
• Attend community events and other occasions where the students will be performing if possible.
• Be responsible and accountable about your availability for the weekly rehearsal roster.
• Act as a role model and mentor to young people with complex and often traumatic backgrounds.
• Attend inductions and trainings where possible.
• Record and submit volunteer hours.
• Comply with ASC policies & procedures, identify OHS concerns and communicate these to ASC staff (e.g. report hazards or incidents).
• Keep attendance records and send to program coordinator.
• Notify coordinator or staff member present if you encounter any problems or if under-aged participants leave the room.

Legislative Requirements

• Ensure compliance with relevant policies and legislative requirements such as Occupational Health & Safety (OHS), the Commonwealth Privacy Act and ASC Child Protection Policy.
• Obtain a Working With Children Check and a Police Check before starting your work with ASC.
• Familiarise yourself with relevant policies, procedures and work practices of ASC

Selection Criteria

• Demonstrated formal or informal experience as a piano teacher or in playing the piano with a desire to develop your teaching skills.
• A high standard of performance on a relevant instrument.
• A passion for working with young people with complex or vulnerable backgrounds.
• Excellent verbal communication, interpersonal skills and facilitation skills.
• Demonstrated flexibility, patience and cross-cultural communication, especially in building rapport with young people.
• Experience with young people with complex or vulnerable backgrounds and people from CALD backgrounds.
• Creative and enthusiastic, with the ability to motivate others.
• Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
