Duldig Studio, a public house museum, art gallery and sculpture garden, is located in East Malvern, Melbourne. It is the former home and studio of internationally recognised sculptor Karl Duldig (1902 to 1986) and his wife, artist and inventor Slawa Duldig (née Horowitz) (1902 to 1975).

Duties required:

  • Welcome visitors to the studio
  • Introduce the current exhibition
  • Lead visitors around the heritage rooms, sculpture garden and studio and recount the stories of the items on display
  • Handle collection of entry fees, book sales, PayPal and cash transactions, and issue receipts
  • Reporting (timesheets, numbers of visitors, moneys received)
  • Encourage visitors to join our database to receive information about events, leave a comment in the Visitor’s Book, and/or become a Member
  • Oral promotion of forthcoming events to visitors
  • Prepare for pre-booked group tours: set up chairs, play videos, prepare tea, coffee and cake trolley
  • After specialist training, deliver talks on the collection and the current temporary exhibition to groups and individual visitors
  • Occupy a station in a room of the house and provide information while at the same time politely ensuring that visitors do not touch the exhibits
  • Children’s art classes: provide administrative assistance to the instructor, meet and greet
  • Occasional conservation assistance, mainly dusting exhibits

Personal attributes:

  • Commitment – Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of two volunteer slots per month
  • Reliability – We are looking for people who can commit to their allocated shifts  or provide good notice of a cancellation whenever possible.
  • Basic computer literacy – able to use email and access the Internet. Roster slots are emailed out to volunteers once a month and responses required within a few days
  • Team spirit - Willingness to work as a member of our friendly and committed team and to follow guidelines.
  • An interest in art history/ 20th Century European history - An interest in learning and communicating the history of the former occupants of the house.
  • Friendly and outgoing personality; ability to work with children (Working with Children Certificate required for those working with children) .
  • Accuracy – simple record keeping of accounts, timesheets etc.
  • Able to handle PayPal transactions or willing to learn.
  • Fine Arts or Art History background or experience as a guide or public speaker – welcome but certainly not a prerequisite.
  • Public speaking, guiding or teaching experience – welcome but not essential. Once a volunteer becomes familiar with the Duldig Studio’s systems and the background of the house museum, there will be an opportunity for those who express an interest in doing so to train as a tour guide and address group tours .
