About the organisation

Jesuit Social Services is a social change organisation working to build a just society where all people can live to their full potential. Since 1977, Jesuit Social Services has provided services to some of the most disadvantaged in our community. We place a high priority on advocacy and are a leader in policy development and research.

Introduction

In Australia 18 per cent of women and 4.7 per cent of men report having suffered sexual abuse before they had turned 15.  An international analysis suggests the rates are higher at 19.7 per cent for girls and 7.9 per cent for boys.  Jesuit Social Services through The Men’s Project is piloting innovative prevention responses and interventions to stop this harm from occurring in the first instance.   One of these initiatives is an inaugural Australian child sexual abuse prevention symposium scheduled for July 2020 in Brisbane involving law enforcement, policy makers, academics, nonprofit organisations and government.  The Event Coordinator role is critical to implementing this symposium.

About the Program

The Men’s Project is an initiative of Jesuit Social Services launched in 2017. It provides leadership on the reduction of violence and other harmful behaviours prevalent among boys and men, and builds approaches to improve their wellbeing and keep families and communities safe.Our vision is for good men, respectful relationships and safe communities. We will achieve this by:

  • promoting positive change around
  • gender norms and stereotypes and what it means to be a man in the 21st century;
  • learning from and expanding programs that build positive relationship skills and improve the wellbeing of boys and men
  • developing innovative ways to stop cycles of violence and harmful behaviour among boys and men.

Current priorities for The Men’s Project include:·

  • research to better understand the attitudes and behaviours of boys and young men
  • developing new early intervention approaches with a focus on community activation and educational settings
