ENVISION Employment mentoring is a unique approach to empowering newly-arrived young people (18-25) to address their needs, interests and strengths pertaining to employment. Mentors guide mentees to set strengths-based career goals and explore practical pathways to achieving their career aspirations.
ENVISION Employment’s mentoring model matches 1 volunteer mentor to 2 mentees. Group mentoring models are found to be effective in meeting newly-arrived refugee and migrant young people’s social support needs, at a point when they are developing a sense of belonging and navigating changes to their cultural or personal identity. Maintaining the smallest group possible – i.e. 2 mentees – in the ENVISION Employment mentoring model allows for individualised attention and the fostering of a caring and trusting relationship between mentors and mentees.
By supporting newly-arrived young people through mentoring, the program’s committed volunteers act as invaluable, experienced role models who help solidify their mentees’ work prospects for the future.
We are looking for volunteers who:
- Are interested in supporting young people from a migrant or refugee background
- Can commit to mentoring two newly-arrived young people a 12-month period
- Can reliably attend fortnightly or monthly catch ups with their mentees and be available on the phone/email in between meetings
- Have at least 3 years professional work experience and a good understanding of employment norms in Australia
- Can be a positive and engaging role model for newly-arrived young people seeking to join the workforce
- Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Have the ability to work autonomously, can be self-reflective and can respond to feedback and directions from CMY staff.
- Are able to travel within/across Melbourne to meet with their mentees
