Peer Champion - My Aged Care Support Program - Coffin Bay

    Support session times will vary. Session times are half hour each. Attend support meetings every 8-10 weeks. * Best practice volunteer involvement recommends that a volunteer role be a maximum of 15-16 hours per week.

    * Material presented and distributed at support sessions is current and accurate COTA SAs values and objectives are upheld during sessions and at all levels of contact with other groups, organisations and individuals
    * The project evaluation is completed within one week of a support session Intellectual property of the project and COTA SA is protected
    * COTA SA is advised in writing of any issues identified during the support sessions
    * Currently hold or be willing to obtain a compliant National Police Certificate as per the COTA SA National Police Check Policy.
    * Completion of the COTA SA Volunteer Orientation and Induction program
    * Work within the scope of responsibilities of the volunteer Champion role
    * Advise COTA SA in writing of any issues related to the role
    * Ensure the intellectual property of the project and COTA SA is protected.
    * Ensure that COTA SA's values and objectives are upheld during discussions and always when in contact with other groups, organisations and individuals.
    * Return all resources and equipment to COTA SA on the completion of the project.

    Please Note:
    * During the Covid-19 pandemics, organisations should be providing all necessary Covid-19 safety protection measures for volunteers following the advice of both the Sate or Territory Governments and the Federal Government. Your safety and wellbeing is your priority. Familiarise yourself with the most up-to-date requirements and advice from the Australian and NT and SA State Governments.
    * As each organisation provides different levels/types of insurance, volunteers are reminded to check with the organisation as to the type of insurance provided for volunteers (e.g. Volunteer Personal Accident Insurance).
    * Best practice volunteer involvement recommends that a volunteer role should not be more than 15-16 hours per week.

    * May be arranged via the Organisation. Details to be provided on expression of interest.

The role of the Peer Champion is to provide one-on-one telephone and or face to face My Aged Care information and support to older members of their community in identified community venues. The Peer Champion will also deliver small group sessions where possible, as well as engage in promotion of their role with support from COTA SA.

The Peer Champion will provide accurate information on;

  • Understanding My Aged Care relevant to the audience/individual
  • Engaging and registering with My Aged Care via the telephone
  • Navigating the My Aged Care website (where required)
  • Types of assistance and support available to help older people stay in their own homes.
  • The rights and responsibilities of consumers and their carers
  • The rights and responsibilities of service providers

Primary responsibilities of the role include:

  • Promotion of the Champions role and service locally, independently and with support from My Aged Care Support Program Project Officer
  • Facilitate agreed number support sessions, either over the phone or face to face
  • Completion of an evaluation form with each support session recipient and as many group session attendees as possible
  • Be available, once a week, in a fixed location, to provide support sessions to the community (where agreed)

Your related knowledge and experiences include:

  • Prior knowledge of the structure and understanding of My Aged Care and or lived experiences as a user of My Aged Care
  • Understanding of issues affecting older people who wish to remain living independently at home within the community, including those from different cultural backgrounds and who are from diverse communities
  • Working with older people individually and in groups
