Volunteer Mentor for a Young Person with Autism in Sunbury

Extended Families Australia
Logo for Extended Families Australia

Extended Families works with a group of volunteers who believe that having joy in your life and being a part of your community is important for everyone. To that end, we support children and young people with a disability aged 0-30 across Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula to build friendships and connect with their community. Extended Families supports diverse families and is seeking the same in our volunteers. No matter who you are or where you’re from, we would love to hear from you! No specific qualifications are required, however a minimum of 12 months commitment to the program is requested. Our volunteers all bring different life experiences and skill sets to the role.

Volunteer Mentor Needed! Location: Sunbury

Tyler is 15 year old boy with a great sense of adventure and love of the outdoors. He has Autism and ADHD and enjoys keeping busy and being active. Tyler lives with his mother and 2 younger sisters. His family have very few supports in their own network and his mum feels Tyler would greatly benefit from having a positive male role model in his life to hang out with, learn from and get out into the community with on a regular basis.

Tyler has lots of interests and it would be great to see him connect with someone who shares some of these. He loves all things outdoors like camping, fishing, bike riding and 4WDing. He enjoys riding his scooter at the local skate park and going to indoor play centres like BOUNCE. He has a love of cars and particularly enjoys the mechanics of how things work. He also likes sports and going to the footy, so someone who would enjoy these types of activities would be a perfect Mentor match for Tyler!

Tyler can be a bit shy at first and sometimes gets frustrated when things don’t work out as planned, so he may need some support and guidance at times. Our Volunteer Induction process will help to get you equipped for better understanding Tyler’s needs and how best to support him.

Tyler’s mum would like to see him supported by a Volunteer Mentor who could visit him and accompany him on outings for a few hours each fortnight. The family’s availability includes either Friday evenings after school or anytime during the day on Saturdays or Sundays.

If you are someone who is keen to make a difference in someone’s life and would enjoy taking on a mentoring role with Tyler, we would love to hear from you!
