For over 65 years Inclusion Melbourne has been supporting adults with intellectual disabilities. We assist people to realise their potential, develop confidence and attain greater independence through various initiatives.

The primary aim of this volunteer position is to provide ongoing counselling sessions to support a woman in the 30's who has an intellectual disability, with the aim of enhancing her confidence, building self-esteem, and providing/teaching better coping skills. Also it is important to provide this woman with the opportunity to talk with a trusted person who will be an active listener when she is sharing her concerns. We are seeking a kind, patient and empathetic counsellor to meet regularly with our client. The counsellor would be required to support this individual to explore her personal identity and develop a better understanding of her self-expression.  This will also involve supporting her with her socially appropriate behaviours, communication skills, and skills around managing anxiety.  The right volunteer for this position must have patience, good communication skills, sensitivity, flexibility, and be able to demonstrate commitment to working in a professional, confidential manner with an adult with intellectual disability.

You MUST have specific qualifications, with a minimum of 3 - 4 years university/college based study in this area, and be able to volunteer your time for a MINIMUM of 12 months. The volunteer counsellor for this position needs to be able to develop a trusting relationship with the person and take the time to establish & build a  good rapport with her, prior to advancing into the area of counselling sessions.  Counselling sessions are to be held at least fortnightly on a regular ongoing basis.  Apply now if you are genuine, fully qualified, and know that you can provide counselling support for at least one whole year.
