Crew responsibilities Selection of personnel should be done at the Shire or brigade level. The Region shall approve the final deployment list. Crew members nominated for deployment must be registered members on the DFES Resource Management System (RMS).It is preferred that all crew members deploying have attained a minimum training standard of Introduction to Bush Fire Fighting.Crews must be aware that deployment (including travel) is for 5 days unless documented otherwise. The general briefing of crews should include the following:·

  • Crews may experience long periods of standby or low activity·
  • All PPE/PPC is to be worn in a correct manner·
  • All injuries need to be reported to the crew leader (and up the chain of command) immediately·
  • All personnel have a responsibility for their own health and safety·         While “off shift” crews are expected to be resting and remain together·
  • Crews are reminded that they are representing their home brigade / shire / agency and as such appropriate behavior is expected·         Alcohol shall not be consumed whilst “on shift”·
  • Whilst deployed at the incident, crews should raise any issues of concern with their Strike Team/Task Force Leader in the first instance.
  • All personnel require personal effects sufficient for the deployment duration
  • DFES will cover all food, accommodation and operational costs. DFES will not cover any costs such as mini bar tabs and alcohol bills, video/ movie hire, phone/fax calls from hotels, or other expenses not authorized by the Strike Team / Task Force Leader. 
  • Crew members must be aware that they are volunteering for deployment.  If employed and wishing to be paid for the period of deployment they must seek permission from their employer and ensure that there are provisions for  paid emergency service  leave in their working agreement or award prior to deployment.
