The Boroondara Volunteer Resource Centre is advertising this role on behalf of Austin Health.

Austin Health is commencing a new and exciting activity program at their Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital site (Ward 9) and are seeking volunteers to participate in this new initiative.  Volunteers will play an important role in supporting patients with delirium and dementia and their families to have the best possible experience in hospital.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

• Support patients with delirium and dementia and their families to have the best possible experience in hospital
• Facilitate small group and one on one activities with patients in a structured program
• Take the time to get to know each patient and engage with them in activities that are tailored to their individual interests and abilities

Skills and Experience:

• Strong verbal communication skills
• Good listening skills
• Empathy
• Interacting with the patients and visitors
• Willingness to be supportive and provide assistance as required
• Patience/tolerance with confused patients
• Good Teamwork
• Volunteers do not need to have any professional skills or prior experience of working with people with delirium and dementia, just enthusiasm, patience, a caring nature, reliability and a willingness to learn
