Our volunteers provide valuable support to the community in times of emergencies and need. All team members are well trained and well supported to carry out a range of activities such as:

  • Responding to natural disasters - Floods, Cyclones, Storms, Tsunamis and Earthquakes
  • Responding to emergencies – Land Search, Vehicle Rescues (In specified areas)
  • Working with the community to prepare for storms and minimize the risk of damage
  • Provide support to other emergencies around the state
  • Provide support to other emergency services
  • Provide support in specialist areas – Communications support unit, Mounted section, Canine section

Volunteers undertake various roles according to their abilities, interests, and what they are comfortable with. The different SES roles are listed below.

  • Community safety and education
  • Temporary repairs to buildings and homes
  • Map reading and navigation
  • Communications
  • Search and rescue
  • Flood response
  • Road crash rescue (in specified areas)
  • First aid
  • Logistics
  • Welfare
  • Administration social and digital media unit marketing and public relations.

All of the roles available offer great personal satisfactions give you the opportunity to meet new people, to help people and to challenge yourself.

Your safety and your training are an important apart of our work. Training is every 2nd Monday evening from 7-9pm in Northam and very occasional weekends. Of course we then hope you are available to attend call out emergencies wherever possible depending on your role with us.

A reasonable level of literacy and numeracy is required for all roles with SES. Ideally you will located in the Northam area.
