Collection Services Volunteer for Library (Cataloguing)
Vision AustraliaPURPOSE
To assist with cataloguing new content for the VA library collection, primarily in the DAISY audio format.
This position will assist with increasing the number of books in the collection available for library clients to read.
Cataloguing is the system by which all new content – books, magazines, newspapers etc. - is added to a library collection in order for library members to find, request and read this content.
This volunteer position prefers applicants to have recognised library qualifications, preferably Librarian or Library Technician level. Students are welcome to apply if they are at minimum in the second year of the library degree/diploma and have completed the cataloguing component of the course.
This position will report to the Senior Librarian or nominated delegate within the Collection Services department. Reporting will occur both in person and via email.
A half day to a full day is the amount of time requested of the volunteer.
KEY DUTIES
The volunteer will:
• Catalogue new content for the library collection in the DAISY audio format directly in to the Libraries Australia database, using an existing template. Pay strict attention to detail when entering information in to the catalogue fields.
• Use internal and external databases such as Libraries Australia and supplier websites to search for required information to fill in the catalogue fields.
• Enter the catalogue record metadata in to a spread sheet and provide this to the Acquisitions Librarian as requested. This spread sheet will be supplied with the required information listed in the column headings.
• Liaise with the Senior Librarian and Acquisitions Librarian to meet targets for the number of records to be catalogued and report and resolve any issues with the cataloguing process.
• Complete required data recording tasks to accurately record information about your volunteering activities.
The volunteer may:
• Catalogue new content in formats other than DAISY on occasion, such as Braille or Braille music.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
The volunteer will demonstrate abilities in:
• Library cataloguing skills at a minimum of second year degree/diploma level
• Knowledge of AACR2, RDA and MARC cataloguing systems
• Knowledge of how to search the Libraries Australia catalogue
• Familiarity with library management systems
• Attention to detail when cataloguing
• Basic Excel spread sheet skills
DESIRABLE SKILLS (NOT ESSENTIAL)
The volunteer may have abilities in:
• Administration skills
• Working with minimal supervision
• Working with people who are blind or have low vision• Knowledge of a community language
• Knowledge of Onix for Books standard
TRAINING
Training for this role includes:
• Libraries Australia library management system cataloguing functions
• Internal databases – Sharepoint
• Searching book supplier databases
• Role specific (as required)
