Logo for The Story Island Project

The Story Island Project is a Hobart-based not-for-profit organisation that nurtures the creativity and writing skills of young Tasmanians aged 7–17 and celebrates their diverse voices.

Supported by a team of enthusiastic volunteer tutors, Story Island runs dynamic storytelling workshops where children and teenagers are empowered to create their own stories.

Our vision is for children and teenagers to harness the power of their imaginations so they can grow to be resilient and creative shapers of their own lives.

As a Volunteer Tutor in Story Island workshops, you will assist young people one-on-one or in small groups, to give them valuable individual attention and encouragement with their writing and other creative storytelling activities – that’s when the magic really happens!

Volunteer Tutors support and encourage young people in many ways, including:

  • helping young people to understand the instructions given by the workshop leader ('Storyteller) *listening to and giving positive feedback on young people’s writing
  • asking questions to help young people develop their ideas
  • suggesting strategies when young people get ‘stuck’
  • helping young people to write down their stories
  • encouraging young people to stay on task
  • helping with spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • allowing students time to think as they develop their creative ideas

If this sounds like you, please contact us to register your interest in joining the Story Island volunteer community. We'll be in touch soon to organise a time to meet you!
