    The following skills and experience will be needed in order to fulfil this role:
    • experience with horses would be an advantage but not absolutely necessary if prepared to learn on the job
    • well-developed time management and daily planning skills
    Other Requirements
    This position requires you to be physically able to do any and all the following tasks for reasonable periods:
    • kneel and squat (we have some tiny ponies)
    • work on uneven and sometimes slippery surfaces
    • lift and carry hay and buckets of feed (nothing over 5kg)

Our Hoofbeats Sanctuary operates from a 5-acre facility in Doonan on the Sunshine Coast. The role of Horse Care Team Members is to do shifts on the horse care roster, ensuring that welfare checks are made on the horses twice a day, 7 days a week.

In the morning session (any time before 10am), the horses are checked for any signs of illness of injury, their rugs are taken off (only a couple of our horses wear rugs), fly masks put on those who need them and water troughs are checked. Sunscreen put on those who need it. The horses also receive their extra feeds in the morning session along with any supplements or medications that they may need.

In the late afternoon session (any time after 3pm and before dark), horses are checked again, rugs are put on and fly masks taken off. Any horses on ulcer medication are given their dose in this session. For your safety, two people are present at all times.

Responsibilities • participate within a team to ensure that our horses are safe and well cared for • implement regular horse health welfare checks (once a week the horses’ weights are checked) • identify issues/problems as they occur and suggest solutions • adapt to a changing environment • comply with team leader instructions • participate and contribute positively as a team member to achieve team objectives • make a positive contribution to team work plans • provide assistance to team members to successfully achieve work plans and tasks within time frames • provide guidance and training to others within the scope of competency • ensure work environments are clean and safe • comply IGAB’s safety requirements and report all non-compliance to the team leader • comply with IGAB policies • take all reasonable care for personal health and safety; and take reasonable care that personal acts or omissions do not adversely affect the health and safety of other persons
