The Purpose of this Role

The Salvation Army is dedicated to enhancing the confidence and capacity of new arrivals to Australia by providing a number of support programs including conversational English classes. These classes are managed by Salvation Army Corps (churches) and community expressions and in addition to teaching English, aim to create well connected, diverse and thriving local communities. While the classes are direct toward newly arrived migrants, asylum seekers and refugees, the classes are available to anyone requiring English support.

Volunteer English Class Facilitators are tasked with: ●       Leading and facilitating classes ●       Creating a safe and welcoming learning environment ●       Teaching participants conversational English (content provided)

Personal Qualities/Attributes Required for Role

●       Excellent communication skills; fluent in English and possess excellent grammar ●       Ability to positively interact with diverse groups of people ●       Ability or willingness to learn how to lead and facilitate small classes ●       Able to demonstrate a high level of cultural awareness and sensitivity ●       Able to demonstrate empathy and approach tasks in a non-judgemental way ●       Understand and abide my professional boundaries ●       Able to work within a team environment and autonomously ●       Reliable and committed to the role ●       Friendly and positive disposition ●       A respect and willingness to work within the ethos of The Salvation Army

Qualifications

and experience requirements for the Role

●       Experience working with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse people highly desirable

  • No formal teaching qualifications required, we have a set curriculum plan, just a genuine desire to see people's lives improved through learning conversational English
  • English language skills required: fluent in English and possess excellent grammar
  • Approachable demeanor, adaptable communication style, and a patient attitude

Mandatory Requirements of the Role

●       Willingness to undertake The Salvation Army’s Criminal History Record Check (at the organisation’s expense) ●       Willingness to obtain a Working with Children Check ●       Willingness to abide by relevant protocol such as Confidentiality Agreement and Business Dealings Agreement and others as required

Time Commitment

●       Available to facilitate a 2 hour classes a week, ideally for a minimum period of 3 months (renewable at the agreement of both parties)

  • Classes will be held at the following times;

Tuesday evenings 6pm - 8pm Thursday mornings 10am - 12noon Saturday mornings 10am - 12noon ** Please advise in expression of interest which class/shift is appropriate for you ** ROLES CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FOR IMMEDIATE START

Location: Fairfield NSW

Training: We will provide training for volunteers prior to commencing their role.

Commitment: To ensure consistency for program participants, we are requesting a  minimum 3 month commitment as a volunteer.

References and Integrity checks will be a requirement of this role.
