Social Circles Volunteer - George Town

Australian Red Cross
Logo for Australian Red Cross
  • Ongoing (minimum 12 months)
  • Average 1 – 2 hours per week

The program Having good social connections is essential for all aspects of health, especially as we age. Red Cross Social Circles program supports elderly members of the community to be more independent, improve their well-being and social connection and remain living in the community. We do this by matching caring and friendly volunteers with an older person who is not in regular social contact with people. The visits that the volunteers make have an important impact on the elderly person’s life: enhancing their sense of well-being, supporting good physical and mental health, promoting healthy ageing and making them more resilient to life’s knocks and challenges.

The opportunity This role suits someone over the age of 18 who is a good listener and can commit to one hour a week/fortnight for a social visit to an elderly person where you might chat together, reminisce, listen to music, read the newspaper or play card games.

The impact As a Social Circles Volunteer, you’ll brighten the life of someone suffering vulnerability by offering them company and friendship. You’ll also brighten your own life: gaining satisfaction, enjoyment and personal development through your visits.  Red Cross will ensure you have training, ongoing support and access to other opportunities within the World’s largest humanitarian network.

For more information, please contact Julie Milloy, Monday - Thursday on (03) 6326 0400.
