CanTeen supports 12-25-year-olds, their parents and families with cancer in their worlds, whether it’s their own diagnosis, a close family member’s cancer or the death of a loved one. CanTeen has a clear focus on meeting the needs of these young people, their parents, and families through its programs, services, resources, advocacy work, and research and evaluation.

We are looking for keen volunteers to support the Research and Evaluation Team with their projects. The volunteer/s will assist staff working on evaluations of CanTeen services, including face-to-face and online support; overnight Acceptance and Commitment Therapy programs; or When Cancer Comes Along (CanTeen’s high school cancer education program).

The position is based in CanTeen’s National Office in Newtown. You must be able to work one 6-hour day per week for at least 6 months. The position requires strong attention to detail, problem solving skills, and a high level of written and verbal communication skills. We will provide on the job training in all relevant areas for this role, including research ethics, data entry, online questionnaire development, and using statistical software such as SPSS. You may have opportunities to learn about the academic publishing process. Please be aware that you will not have any direct contact with research participants. You will be asked to work flexibly across a variety of tasks and projects.

You are invited to apply if you have commenced your fourth year of university in Psychology or similar (e.g., Behavioural Sciences). We expect that by volunteering you will gain valuable experience in database management, program implementation, and working as part of a research team in the Not for Profit sector. This may be useful if you are considering further studies or a career in research, program development, or health promotion.  You will also be offered the opportunity to participate in internal professional development and CanTeen social events.

Essential criteria:

• Commenced fourth year of university in Psychology or similar (e.g., Behavioural Sciences)
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Familiarity with quantitative and qualitative research design
• Regular experience using SPSS
• Excellent knowledge of Excel
• Excellent attention to detail
• Ability to problem solve and work independently

• Setting up online questionnaires
• Data entry
• Literature searching
• Printing resources or data collection tools
• Entering references to EndNote
• Reviewing qualitative interview transcripts
