The program

A volunteer is matched with a parent who is socially isolated from usual support networks including multiple birth families and those experiencing Post Natal Depression or Anxiety. They undertake a weekly home visit to assist to build parents' confidence by skill building and role modelling and improve their wellbeing and resilience by assisting to link into their community. Each family has 12 weeks of support. Volunteers complete their visits during normal business hours i.e. one 4hr period Monday to Friday.

By supporting parents in need, Red Cross helps them support their children at the most vulnerable and important times of their lives.

The opportunity

Applicants must be over 18yrs and have a commitment of 4hrs per week for 12 weeks per family on a 6-12 months commitment. To be eligible for this position, you will require the following specifications:

  • Experience with newborn and young children & ability to lift & play with them

  • Reliable and punctual

  • Maintain confidentiality at all times

  • Available to attend the program orientation training and attend ongoing training opportunities as requested, where possible

  • Valid Australian drivers licence (and own car preferred)

As a program requirement, applicant must have a current Working with Children check or willingness to obtain one. National Police Clearance will be completed internally by Red Cross on application.

The impact

As a Family Support volunteer, you will help vulnerable parents support their children at the most important times of their lives, reducing the risk of post natal depression. You will help parents get their family’s health and wellbeing on track.

Red Cross will ensure you have training, ongoing support and access to other opportunities within the World’s largest humanitarian network.
