An ITP volunteer is required to: Facilitate communication between the person and police and provide assistance to contact a lawyer, relative or friend if requested. To help the person understand their rights and the legal advice given. To inform police if they observe that the person does not fully understand their rights or circumstances at any stage of the process. To also ensure the person understands the questions asked by police, which may involve you requesting the police rephrase a question for clarity. You are also required to request a break during an interview, if the person is becoming distressed or is unable to concentrate.
