We envisage this is a 10-15 hour a week role. We would like someone to take on the role until the end of 2019, at which point you may want to continue to build up our program, or move on. The hours you work would be up to you. You will need access to your own computer for the role. We have internet access at the Scullin Traders if you need this however we envisage you will need this at home too.

We will provide you with any practical support you need and welcome you onto our team.
Your skills and attributes.
Organised - we are a fully-volunteer led project and need people who can make things happen.
Creative - we don’t yet know how the workshop series will play out, but we see it as a potential to help turn the space into a destination for locals across Canberra. We already have huge interest in our creative workshops and are putting in arts grant funding requests to support this aspect of our work too (as we speak!).
Community and commercially minded - the workshop series has both these at its core, so you’ll need to be able to think with both hats. If the workshops became an income earner we would suddenly be able to pay key staff in the Scullin Traders: a game changer!
Positive - the project is new and will involve some trial and error. We need people who are happy to try different approaches when our first attempt doesn’t work - there’ll be plenty of that!
We are seeking an organised, reliable and creatively-minded volunteer to help set up and manage the Scullin Traders’ workshop program.
The space: Scullin Traders The Scullin Traders is a community entrepreneurship hub run by the Scullin Community Group. As a key part of the community’s efforts to transform the vibe of the struggling Scullin shops, the space features comfy couches for coffee drinkers, handmade products from Canberra microbusinesses, and a coworking space and creative workshops for the Canberra community. Workshops and our connection to creativity are a huge thrust of the Scullin Traders project.
The space is run entirely by volunteers and was supported by a $5000 donation from the ACT Chief Minister’s fund. While we aim to help our small microtraders make a profit (we want small businesses to succeed!) any profits made by the Scullin Community Group will be fed back into our mission to change the shops and give residents a place to be proud of and to share with others. We are an incorporated association and about to register with the ACNC for charity status.
The Workshops Some workshops will be charged at commercial rates. Some will be a result of grant funding (and likely be run at low or no cost to participants). We also envisage renting out the space to small businesses to run their own workshops in the space.
Our new workshops coordinator is a key role for our project, so we are seeking someone organised, reliable and creative-minded. The workshops coordinator will help set up and manage the Scullin Traders’ workshop program. You will be supported by our traders, by our social media volunteer and by the excellent Scullin Community Group committee to get this job done. For example, if you need to put things on our website, we’ll help make that happen. If you need help designing promotional material, you can tap into our other skilled volunteers to do that.
Having said that, we have TONS of things on, so we really want someone who is excited by the potential and able to take the task and lead it. For this role, we need an initiator, and a ‘doer’. You can work from home or work from the Scullin Traders space any time you like.
How we will support you: The Scullin Community Group is run by a large number of enthusiastic, skilled and active volunteers. As a key part of the team you will be welcomed, supported and helped in any way possible by the group, but particularly by the key committee (Sue, Rachel, Emily and others).
Although we hope you can make most decisions on your own (because we have lots of other tasks we are doing ourselves), we’ll always be around to talk/help/support what you are doing. We will learn and grow together.
More about the Scullin Community Group The Scullin Community Group began in October 2018 to build community and transform the struggling local Scullin shops.
Things moved fast. Within weeks, they setup a Facebook group (now with almost 300 members), organised the community group’s first get together (it was a hit) and joined with other locals, the Southern Cross Early Childhood School, local businesses, government representatives and other interested community groups to start changing Scullin for the better. As well as four street libraries, social soccer on a Tuesday night, and dozens of new friendships, the groups’ early wins have included: approval for murals on the shops’ external walls; designing and installing a community noticeboard; and attracting a coffee cart to the shops’ courtyard. In May 2019 the group opened the Scullin Traders: a community entrepreneurship hub featuring comfy couches for coffee drinkers, handmade products from Canberra creative, a coworking space and creative workshops. The space is run entirely by volunteers and was supported by a $5000 donation from the ACT Chief Minister’s fund.
