Vinnies NIL Scheme

Vinnies No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) is a program that provides individuals and families on low incomes with access to safe, fair and affordable credit. NILS loans are provided to help people living on low incomes to purchase significant or essential new household items, or a service, that improves their quality of life or enhances social and economic participation.

As a NILS Support Volunteer, you will assist the Client Support Officer and play a central role in the operations of the Society.

The Volunteer Role

The NILS Support Volunteer will perform a variety of tasks including:

  • Answering phones;
  • Respond to NILS enquiries in an efficient and timely manner (phone, face to face or email);
  • Send out loan application packs to prospective borrowers via mail and email;
  • Collect and check Loan applicant documents;
  • Enter applicant information into the MyNILSapp software;
  • Perform NILS loan interviews, using MyMILSapp, in accordance with approved policies and procedures;
  • General office duties;
  • Maintain records in a
  • Provide assistance to the Client Support Officer;
  • Maintain records in accordance with policies and procedures of Good Shepherd Microfinance and the Society; and
  • Maintain client confidence by keeping loan information confidential.

The volunteers we are seeking will ideally:

  • Be a people person – welcoming, encouraging and positive;
  • Be willing to work within the ethos of the St Vincent de Paul Society;
  • Be respectful of others and flexible in their attitude to work and the team;
  • Be able to analyse and interpret financial data;
  • Proficient computer skills including the Microsoft Suite;
  • Proficient communicator and listener with a high degree of diplomacy when dealing with people in difficult circumstances;
  • Excellent relationship building skills – able to connect with people from diverse backgrounds;
  • Demonstrated understanding of the credit needs of people on low incomes, and a commitment to promoting financial inclusion;
  • An eye for detail;
  • Broad experience in office practices; and
  • Demonstrated experience working independently and as part of a team.

No experience needed as coaching and training is provided. We welcome those with previous office backgrounds to share their experience with their fellow volunteers.
