Marketing and Communications Assistant Volunteer

Cancer Council NSW is a community funded, community focused cancer charity dedicated to working towards a cancer free future. There are things that we can all do every day to help make this happen.

Supporting the Metro Sydney Team and based at Woolloomooloo, your key accountabilities will include:

• Writing and pitching stories to local media outlets • Supporting the team with media tracking and reporting • Reviewing event media plans and preparing media releases for events such as Dance for Cancer, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea and Relay For Life. • Contacting Cancer Council supporters via phone/email who are happy to share their story • Researching and developing innovative media/community engagement techniques and processes for the Metro Sydney Region • Supporting small graphic design projects using Canva • Updating suburban media contact lists and other useful tools • Participating in meetings and updating the team on project progress • Assisting with the coordination of event media launches and coordination of media attendance at these events • Taking ownership of allocated media projects • Managing social media content for event Facebook pages • Collaborating with a team of volunteers and Cancer Council staff • Assisting with administration duties as required

Our ideal volunteer will have: • Previous experience in drafting media releases • Previous experience in pitching stories to the media • Knowledge of and/or experience with social media • Excellent written and verbal communication skills • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail • Excellent Microsoft Office skills including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint • Willingness to take ownership of tasks • Initiative and enthusiasm • Commitment to the cancer cause and the mission of Cancer Council NSW.

Desirable (but not essential) •     Currently studying or completed a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Public Relations / Marketing / Media / Communications or related field • Previous exposure to the not-for-profit industry or working with volunteers. • Occasional availability to attend events out of office hours
