The program

Red Cross has been responding to emergencies and providing humanitarian assistance in Australia since 1914. We are committed to strengthening and extending our emergency aid services to assist all Australians in preparing for, responding to and recovering from emergencies.

As a Red Cross Emergency Services Volunteer, you will have the opportunity to choose from two styles of volunteering: Response or Proactive or both!

Proactive Volunteers are involved in preparing communities, groups and individuals before emergencies, as well as assisting with disaster recovery.

Response Volunteers are rostered to be on-call is an emergency response is required. If you are activated, called to respond,  to an emergency on a day you are rostered, it is expected that you will be able to attend within 90 minutes.

The opportunity

All our Volunteers need to be reliable, possess good interpersonal skills and have the ability to work with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

Further to this, you will have the following mindset and skills:

  • A passion to volunteer for a humanitarian organisation
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Personal experience in managing stressful, emotional and/or adverse situations
  • Understanding of, and respect for, privacy, confidentiality and appropriate boundaries

While mostly working in your local community, Emergency Services Team Members may also have the opportunity to work with communities throughout Victoria and interstate.

Training will be provided which will develop your skills and knowledge to effectively drive Red Cross Emergency Services work, as well as empower you with the ability to make a real difference in the lives of people before, during and after emergencies.

The impact

As a Red Cross Emergency Services Volunteer, you will have an impact on the ground in your communities. Whether it’s leading preparedness workshops or pillowcase presentations in schools, providing Psychological First Aid to people affected by emergencies, or helping communities recover after a disaster, you will be making a real difference in the lives of people before, during and after emergencies.

Red Cross will ensure you have training, ongoing support and access to other opportunities within the world’s largest humanitarian network.

Red Cross is committed to building long-term and respectful partnerships by working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, communities, and organisations to determine and lead their own solutions. To support this commitment, Red Cross is determined to build our capacities through meaningful and rewarding employment and Volunteering opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply.
