About the Program Drawing on our experience of engaging with disadvantaged people, families and communities through our services and programs, the Jesuit Social Services Policy and Advocacy Unit identifies and implements advocacy strategies to achieve the change needed, including through government relations, submissions, and engagement with the media and collaborations with other sector organisations or allies, and other avenues. In 2014, the Catholic Alliance for People Seeking Asylum ( CAPSA)  was formed to influence attitudes in the Australian community. We dream of an Australia that welcomes and respects people seeking asylum.Jesuit Social Services and Cabrini Health jointly founded the Alliance, which is supported by an Advisory Group of national representatives.

About the Role

Key responsibilities for this role include:

  • Assisting organizing attendance to public events and advocacy, including the Palm Sunday Walks for Justice for Refugees
  • Encourage participation from the Catholic community at a national level during the CAPSA National Week of Prayer and Action 2019 (NWPA 2019)
  • Coordinate emails and phone contact with Catholic Schools, Parishes and Organisations to promote the NWPA 2019
  • Respond to requests from schools from CAPSA email·
  • Support other CAPSA events as required

**Volunteer Requirements ** To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Understanding and sympathy with the mission and ethos of Jesuit Social Services Commitment and ability to work effectively with disadvantaged young people, their families and the community
  • A basic understanding or willingness to learn the structure and workings of the Catholic community in Australia.
  • Interest in creating positive change for people seeking asylum and refugees.
  • Valid Working with Children Check Card
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Successful Interview and Police Check Conducted by Jesuit Social Services prior to commencement
