About the organisation Jesuit Social Services is a social change organisation working to build a just society where all people can live to their full potential. Since 1977, Jesuit Social Services has provided services to some of the most disadvantaged in our community. We place a high priority on advocacy and are a leader in policy development and research.

About the Program Drawing on our experience of engaging with disadvantaged people, families and communities through our services and programs, the Jesuit Social Services Policy and Advocacy Unit identifies and implements advocacy strategies to achieve the change needed, including through government relations, submissions, and engagement with the media and collaborations with other sector organisations or allies, and other avenues. In 2014, the Catholic Alliance for People Seeking Asylum ( CAPSA)  was formed to influence attitudes in the Australian community. We dream of an Australia that welcomes and respects people seeking asylum.Jesuit Social Services and Cabrini Health jointly founded the Alliance, which is supported by an Advisory Group of national representatives.

About the Role Key responsibilities for this role include:

  • To research and produce appropriate stories from the Catholic Community across Australia
  • To find opportunities to promote the positive stories occurring at schools and parishes regarding refugees and people seeking asylum through television, radio, print, and online media·
  • To stay informed about current events and news from schools, parishes and catholic organisations
  • To influence hearts and minds in the Australian Catholic community so a greater number of people support a more humane approach to people seeking asylum.
  • To cultivate and maintain appropriate content for CAPSA’s social media, Catholic media and mainstream media by uncovering true stories.·
  • To assist in maximizing the reach and influence of Catholic service and advocacy.
  • To support events such as the NWPA ( National Week of Prayer and Action)

**Volunteer Requirements ** To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Understanding and sympathy with the mission and ethos of Jesuit Social Services Commitment and ability to work effectively with disadvantaged young people, their families and the community
  • A basic understanding or willingness to learn the structure and workings of the Catholic community in Australia.
  • Interest in creating positive change for people seeking asylum and refugees.
  • A basic understanding of WordPress, Facebook &Twitter
  • Valid Working with Children Check Card
  • Successful Interview and Police Check Conducted by Jesuit Social Services prior to commencement
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications or experience
