The VicRoads L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program has been an incredibly successful program in Maribyrnong since its beginnings in 2010. Over the 9 years of the program there has been over 5,800 hours of driving logged and over 60 young people attaining their probationary driver’s license.

Young people without access to a vehicle or a suitable supervising driver faced huge barriers in trying to get their required driving hours. Access to a vehicle and a suitably qualified supervising driver is also a major issue for refugee and migrant communities.  The L2P program began to address this issue by matching young people in need with local volunteers who would mentor them weekly through on-the-road driving experience to meet the legal requirements and become safe, confident and competent drivers.

To continue the success new volunteers are needed to help mentor local young people, to provide them with practical driving experience to help keep them safe on the roads and allow them to obtain their driver’s licence. It is unique program, it allows people from the community better the life of a young person. Gaining a drivers licence gives a young person greater opportunity when it comes to employment, travel to further education, or to help out their family.

The L2P program car is available day and night, 7 days a week for maximum flexibility.  With mentors provided with full training before they start working with a young person. Police check, working with children’s check and a driver history check are also mandatory for all volunteers

Volunteer criteria:

  • Meet with your learner driver for a minimum of 1.5 hrs per week.
