Australian Red Cross
Logo for Australian Red Cross
  • Ongoing role
  • Minimum of 1 to 2 hours per week

The program Our Social Support program provides an opportunity for you to become a friend to an elderly person living alone within our community. By providing social support, sharing interests and accessing the community together you will be enriching another person’s life and your own at the same time.

The opportunity This role suits someone over the age of 18 who is a good listener and communicator and can commit to a minimum of 1 to 2 hours a week for a social visit to an elderly person. Your time spent with the client could be as little as having a chat over coffee, reminiscing, listening to music, reading the newspaper or playing a game of cards or enabling clients to have access to services in their local community. The Central Coast is a natural wonderland and there are numerous cafes, lookouts, libraries, cinemas and more for you to enjoy with a new friend. You will preferably have a current driver’s licence and comprehensive vehicle insurance.

The impact As a Social Support volunteer you will brighten the life of someone experiencing loneliness by offering them company and friendship. Many of our clients report that they have ‘a new lease of life’ once given the opportunity to access the community again. Red Cross will provide ongoing support. For more information, please contact Jane Tenney on (02) 4324 3411 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply.
