Each Op Shop Volunteer is responsible for the following tasks:

  • Welcoming customers on their arrival to the store
  • Assisting customers with their selection of goods
  • Handling cash transactions – one volunteer per day will be the nominated person responsible for the safety of the cash. When in the shop, the responsible person must be in sight of the cash desk at all times
  • Tidying of racks, shelves and displays which includes refolding and rehanging of clothes as required - regularly throughout the day, plus a final tidy at 3:00 pm each afternoon
  • Accepting and sorting donations of goods
  • Cleaning of donations/goods as required
  • Ironing clothes before hanging on display racks
  • Rotating the stock
  • Updating the window display
  • Pricing goods – minimal amounts of pricing may be done at the shop counter when quiet but in the main, this job is to be done in the sorting area
  • Ensure that the front counter is never left unattended
  • It is an expectation of the role that you will be constantly monitoring the presentation of the shop in order to ensure goods are displayed as attractively as possible.

The following tasks need to be performed daily and are required to keep the shop and sorting area in a clean, tidy and safe state. These tasks are shared equally or negotiated among the volunteer staff:

  • Dusting and sweeping or vacuuming the shop area and floors
  • Cleaning the common areas – kitchen, toilet and storage spaces
  • Ensuring the outside of the shop is kept clear of rubbish and donated goods
  • Cleaning windows and removing all out of date signage
  • Cleaning tops of counters, racks & other display cabinets
