Volunteer Sewing Teacher

SisterWorks is seeking a person with advanced sewing skills to teach migrant women to sew at our Richmond premises. Sewing training is one of the main skills we offer at SisterWorks to enable migrant women to learn a new skill and make their own products to sell through our retail and online stores as a source of income. Role Responsibilities

  • Teach migrant women how to use sewing and overlocker machines, as well as hand sewing techniques
  • Encourage the women to become confident sewers with good technique
  • Assist them in understanding different types of fabrics and threads
  • Work with the Operation Lead and Design Lab Coordinators on planning and delivering training schedules

Desired qualities and skills:

  • Previous teaching experience (ideal)
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity and the ability to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, particularly those with limited English
  • Friendly, patient and understanding

Compulsory requirements:

  • Advanced sewing skills (machine and hand) in making toys, homewares and clothing
  • Current Working with Children Check and/or Police Check (if you do not have one, you can apply for one free of cost)
  • Can commit to volunteering every Monday until the end of 2019
