About Us VSA&NT is a not-for-profit organisation, the peak body for volunteering and a volunteer resource centre, leading the sector in South Australia and the Northern Territory. VSA&NT is working in partnership with AMES Australia to recruit volunteers to support newly arrived refugees resettle in Adelaide. AMES Australia is a not-for-profit organisation which works with humanitarian clients, the community, business and Government to provide a comprehensive range of sustainable and effective settlement services for diverse communities.

About the Role The SSP will work to the AMES Australia Settlement Framework. The SSP volunteers will provide settlement support to AMES humanitarian clients; with support tailored to individual needs, the SSP volunteers will work collaboratively with VSA&NT, AMES, and relevant stakeholders using a holistic strength-based approach to strengthen the ability of clients to participate in the economic and social life of Australia. The SSP Volunteer will equip clients with the skills and knowledge to independently access services and connect with family, friends, work, personal interests and local community. As a SSP Volunteer, you will build on clients’ confidence and skills to become self-sufficient in navigating their new environment and facilitating their full participation in Australian life.

Key Responsibilities The ten areas in which SSP Volunteers will assist and support their clients are Settlement Services, Money Management, Australian Law, Employment, Housing, Health, Transport, Education, Family Functioning and Social Support, Orientation to Community, and Feeling at Home in Australia. This support will be tailored to individual needs, meaning some clients may only need help in one area while others may need help in more areas. Examples of ways a SSP Volunteer will foster client’s independence is through:

  • Guiding access to local services (e.g. Medicare, Centrelink, and Medical Centres)
  • Public transport assistance
  • English language support
  • Building their social networks through sports, shopping and other social activities
  • Improving their understanding of Australian cultural practises and
  • Any other practical support to assist the clients align with local and broader Adelaide communities.
