Choice Mentor

Valid

The Boroondara Volunteer Resource Centre is advertising this role on behalf of Valid.

VALID is looking for volunteers to become 'choice mentors' as a part of a new program with the aim of helping socially isolated people with a disability. This enables the person with disability assistance in making choices and decisions that affect their lives, rather than others making the decisions for them. The benefit of volunteering in this role is the balance of power in the relationship – two people working together rather than people who are only paid to be in the person’s life.  If you're friendly, have an open mind, a listening ear and a curious and positive outlook and you're happy to commit for 6-12 months we'd love to hear from you.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Engage with, and build, a constructive relationship with a person with disability
  • Work with the aim of facilitating the participant’s autonomy, independence and skill development
  • Meet or contact the participant by phone at least once a fortnight
  • Send a progress report to the Volunteer Coordinator once a month
  • Contact the Volunteer Coordinator to discuss any difficulty or concern
  • Attend training sessions as required, at the Napier Street location in Fitzroy
  • 6-12 month commitment

Skills and Experience:

  • An interest in, and commitment to, social justice and the rights of people with disability
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • An understanding of, or the ability to develop an understanding of, the NDIS and disability service systems
  • The ability to assist and support people with disability to make and act on their own decisions
  • The skills and ability to identify decision making issues, and to be able to work towards the outcomes identified by the participant
  • The ability to work collaboratively with the Volunteer Coordinator to monitor the decision-making process, including decision making agreements

Benefits: Volunteers who have an interest in social justice, advocacy and the rights of people with disability will find this role, and the training, beneficial. Volunteers are invited to social pub gatherings where they will meet like minded people. This position will provide the volunteer with a rewarding opportunity to make a positive difference in someone's life whilst increasing their experience within the disability sector.

You can not apply for this role as it is no longer available.
