Night Patrol General Hand (Day Team) Volunteer

Night Patrol has been operating in the Canberra region since August 2001. Night Patrol provides mobile outreach offering refreshments and friendly faces to people on the streets every night of the year. The Night Patrol teams are made up of enthusiastic and compassionate volunteers from within the community who receive specialised training to help support those in need. Referrals to our community services are available through Night Patrol.

The Night Patrol General Hand Volunteer primarily carries out the tasks that the Night Patrol program relies on directly for its smooth running operations. These tasks are essential in ensuring that the Night Patrol vans and its volunteers are able to provide a consistent and reliable service each night for those accessing the vans on the streets. The role has limited engagement with people on the streets and it is required for Mondays, Wednesdays, and/or Fridays. A valid (full) drivers license must be held.

Key Responsibilities • Pick up fruit and milk from suppliers and deliver to the Night Patrol Kitchen • Assist with donation sorting and maintaining of adequate stock levels / material aid section of the Night Patrol vans and fill the diesel tank if required • Maintain the Night Patrol Vans and Kitchen clean • Compliance with organisational policies and procedures, training requirements, legislation, health and safety, diversity and a commitment to quality systems and continuous improvement.

Skills and Knowledge • A high level of customer service skills • An alignment with and empathy for people from all community sectors • Communication skills - written and verbal with a wide range of stakeholders • Basic computer skills - ICT office environment

Personal Attributes • High ethical standard, is trustworthy and confidential, works well individually and within a team • Consideration and respect for others and their views and adapts to changing environments • Enthusiastic, projects a positive image with good attention to detail, efficiency and effectiveness.

Work Health and Safety Requirements • Covered shoes to be worn at all times whilst onsite • Manual handling of up to fifteen (15) kilograms with lifting, bending, reaching up and down • Ladder and trolley usage (pushing and pulling movements) • If driving a Society vehicle, a valid (full) drivers license must be held and a copy provided • Personal protective equipment as required is provided and is to be used as instructed

We need to have reasonable confidence that members, volunteers and employees, particularly those who have access to vulnerable persons we are assisting, are of suitable character and do not expose these persons to unacceptable risk. Therefore, volunteers may be required to have a WWVP Card. If you don't have one, we will help you apply for it.
