The Drive Time Mentor Volunteer provides supervised driving practice to selected refugee clients. All driving practice occurs in a NRMA-insured automatic vehicle.

The objectives of the program are:

*Improve road safety outcomes supporting driver licensing disadvantaged communities to meet the Graduated Licensing Scheme (GLS) requirements, leading to reduced crash and injury rates.

*Provide culturally appropriate support and resources that assist driver licensing disadvantaged communities (including Aboriginal communities) to obtain, retain and regain their driver licence across all stages of the licensing pathway.

*Contribute to improved access to education, employment, health and other community participation services for driver licensing disadvantaged communities through the attainment of driver licences.

*Increase equity of opportunity for driver licensing disadvantaged communities to obtain a driver licence and to be a safer and legal road user.

Service providers across NSW are engaged to deliver a range of driver licensing access services and culturally appropriate support and resources, including:

  • Literacy, numeracy and computer skills
  • Licensing enrolment support
  • Learner driver mentoring and supervision
  • Access to roadworthy vehicles
  • Debt negotiation and management
  • Road safety education and coaching.

Criteria:

  • Have not had an at fault accident in the previous two years
  • Have minimum of 3 years safe driving record
  • Have current knowledge of NSW road rules
  • A good knowledge of the area in which you will be
  • Possess minimum basic computer skills, and organisational skills.
  • Commitment and reliability
  • An understanding of issues of client confidentiality and potentially the sensitive nature of people’s personal information

Minimum commitment of 6 months sought. Minimum age: 23 years. The volunteer should speak and write reasonable level of English.

COVID Safe Procedures in place:

  • Pre-screening questions before making an appointment for driving sessions .Personal Protective Equipment PPE is available in bag organiser in the car, we are following the COVID safe practices under public health order.

  • Access to vehicles which are fully maintained and roadworthy

  • All learners who have graduated from the driving school have been assessed as being competent to progress to mentoring sessions

Training: Onroad Driving School workshop, Driving assessment by Onroad driving school driving instructor

  • Notification of all appropriate courses & training.
  • Ongoing “on the job” support & training as required • Supervision as needed or requested & yearly appraisal by Project Coordinator.
