RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Attend an introductory meeting with a resident and staff member of a facility
  • Visit a designated resident in an aged care facility or their own home at least once per fortnight
  • Offer companionship through conversation, reading or other shared activities
  • Provide a record of visits made, to the Coordinator
  • Attend training and support groups where possible.
  • Exercise a duty of care by using commonsense and exercising reasonable caution when undertaking activities in the facility.
  • Respect the rights of the older person and their families
  • Inform the coordinator at Lutheran Community Care in writing of any change of status in regard to the National Criminal History Record Check
  • Be aware of and abide by work, health and safety requirements, emergency procedures and security procedures of the facility or the aged care service provider
  • Contact the Coordinator if there are any difficulties visiting the older person
  • Give notice to the Coordinator if unable to meet your commitments.
  • Community Visitors are not permitted to provide nursing or personal care to older people.
  • Community Visitors are not permitted to become involved in the financial affairs of the older person or to handle any of the person's money, purse or wallets
  • Community Visitors may not take an older person on any outing or appointment unless with the prior consent and authorisation from the Coordinator
  • Adhere to and support LCC’s policies and procedures.
  • Model ethical behavior and practice consistent with the Christian ethos of Lutheran Community Care as outlined in the Code of Conduct and stated Values and Philosophy.
  • Adhere to LCC’s Service Standards respecting the privacy and confidentiality of individuals and families accessing services.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND ATTRIBUTES

  • Has an interest/ understanding of older people and ageing.
  • Has an understanding of grief and loss for older people and volunteers
  • Ability to interact with older people
  • Good communication and listening skills.
  • Ability to work in an aged care home environment and/or in the homes of older people.
  • Ability to commit to visit once a fortnight for at least twelve months
  • Ability to travel to the designated facility or older person's home
  • Ability to cope with changes in visiting arrangements
  • Ability to be non-judgemental and welcoming to people from all cultures and backgrounds.
  • Ability to relate to volunteers and older people with care, courtesy, respect and dignity.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to show initiative and exercise good time management.

Volunteering with LCC is subject to

  • A satisfactory National Police Certificate
  • Working with Children Check
  • Driver's Licence
  • Obtain a statutory declaration regarding the existence of police record if they were a citizen of another country after the age of 16 years
  • Safe Place Training

Lutheran Community Care will meet the cost of the special conditions listed above
