Cockburn Story Dogs Reading Program Volunteers

PLEASE NOTE: To be considered for the position, you will be required to volunteer with your dog, for approx. 2 hours each block, for one school term to gain the knowledge, skill and insight of a volunteer within the program.

All types of dogs, except for restricted dog breeds, are eligible to become part of Story Dogs. The dog’s temperament, obedience and willingness are of utmost importance to our program.

Training

Dogs must pass an accreditation test. Owner training also provided.

Time required

Story Dogs volunteers visit the school of their choice every week, same day and same time, for approximately a two-hour block of time. Students come to cherish their Story Dogs team, so it is very important that you are available and can commit to at least four school terms.

Good communication skills, self motivated. Competent computer and internet skills Able to motivate and enthuse others Good negotiation and problem solving skills Ability to work from home, to visit schools and volunteers and travel throughout the area you coordinate. Genuine interest in children, their education in particular reading and development of literacy skills. Knowledge of dogs, their behaviours, breeds and or be willing to learn.
