Biography Service Volunteer

Client Biography Service: Client biographies can take many forms: life stories, reflections, reviews of specific times or events, family stories, and tributes to loved ones.

The volunteer records the client’s narrative during hour-long home visits. The average biography takes four sessions, but some as few as one or as many as six.

After each session, the volunteer transcribes the recording and edits into a word document. This can take up to four hours for each hour of voice recording.

The completed biography is compiled, bound, and presented by the biographer and biography Team Leader to the client and/or caregiver.

What are the necessary requirements to become a volunteer biographer?

  • Understanding and the commitment to the philosophy of palliative care
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and listening skills
  • Knowledge of English and grammar
  • Transportation, time and flexibility
  • Successful use of voice recording equipment
  • Access to a computer
  • Competent word processing skills
  • Ability to produce an 'easy to read' document
  • Use of own vehicle is required and includes petrol reimbursement
  • Position requires that the applicant will have to undertake mandatory annual OHW&S training.
  • Time required – up to 4-6 hours per week.
