NOTE: COVID-19 procedures and individual school policies apply to non-essential volunteers in school. The requirements are subject to change at any time and further information will be provided at the time of enquiry.

Youth Mentoring is managed by Wimmera Southern Mallee LLEN using the MATES mentoring model, a local initiative created and running since 2010.

Youth Mentoring in Horsham has 2 tiers to support 2 different programs.

Tier 1 –In-school mentoring for young students of all ages to provide engagement and encouragement that supports learning.

Tier 2 –Youth justice diversion – to support ages 10-24 who are at risk. The program operates as an element to the Connecting the Service Puzzle initiative, a community collaboration funded by the Department of Justice and managed by Centre for Participation.

Tier 1 & 2 Youth Mentors all participate in a 2 hours training session providing a solid foundation to engaging and communicating with mentees. Tier 2 Mentors undertake a further 4 hours of training which includes trauma informed practices and skills in deescalating. Mentors are also offered further personal development opportunities such as Youth Mental Health First Aid.

Full support is offered to our Mentors.

The match process is handled with due care. Mentors will be included in this process and be aware of the young person’s circumstances and reasons for entering the program.

Mentors meet with their Mentees at a minimum of once per fortnight for a 12- month commitment and work to engage and enhance skills and life experiences of the young person.

It is an incredibly satisfying role.

You can not apply for this role as it is no longer available.
