Volunteer Mentor for refugee youth
Farnham Street Neighbourhood Learning CentreThe objectives of the Helping Hand program are to: • Maximise the potential of young refugees; • Help a young person settle into the local community, by providing a support structure; • Assist with everyday activities, such as learning English, using public transport, studying and gaining employment; and • Create connections and promote harmony within the community.
The Mentors meet with their Mentee on an ongoing and regular basis, aiming to develop a significant and rich relationship that supports and encourages the student's English and Maths.
In detail, the mentor would be required to: • Commit to building a supportive relationship with the student • Attend and actively participate in information sessions • Meet in person with the mentee for at least 5 hours per month • Complete an activity log after each meeting • Have regular contact and follow up with program coordinator and match support specialist • Attend ongoing monthly mentor meetings or complete and submit activity logs after each Mentor contact meeting • Attend training where possible
