YRIPP continues to provide support during the current conditions of COVID-19. As a response to government health advice, we are currently in the process of moving recruitment, information sessions and training to digital based activities. As an essential service, the Independent Person will be expected to attend police stations where they will provide face-to-face support with social distancing and precautionary measures in place. Anyone who is deemed high risk will be able to undertake the required training, with the exception of becoming an active Independent Person until a later stage.

YRIPP volunteers attend police interviews with young people in police custody when a parent or guardian is not available”.The trained Independent Person (IP) attends the interview with a young person when a parent or guardian is not available. The role provides an important opportunity to support young people at a critical time and help divert those at risk of further offending. YRIPP looks for volunteers who have good communication and social skills, who are reliable, calm and self-reflective. Training and support provided. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.
