Skilled Tutor Volunteers are needed for a settlement support program that provides social, cultural and educational support to newly arrived children and families of refugee and migrant background in Western Sydney.

Settling into a new school environment can be a challenging experience for newly arrived children. This Tutor program pairs newly arrived children in years 5 and 6, with a skilled Volunteer Tutor who assists in the delivery of an individualised learning plan.

About The Role:

  • Work one-on-one, or with a small group of children, supporting each child’s academic development and English language acquisition, building their skills for learning in the classroom
  • Tutor for an hour (minimum) per child within the school premises only, at an agreed upon time that is convenient for yourself and relevant school staff
  • Complete reporting requirements for each child after tutoring session
  • Communicate regularly with staff
  • Volunteers are well supported with professional help and ongoing training
  • Mandatory Training to be completed on Wednesday 2nd October 2019

About You:

Essential:

  • University level qualification in Education or Teaching (Primary or High School), OR
  • Equivalent experience teaching children: such as overseas teaching experience, OR
  • Experience supporting primary aged children in school settings: such as School Learning Support Officer (SLSO), school counsellor, school psychologist
  • Friendly, approachable, patient, creative, and sensitive to cross cultural issues
  • Reliability and commitment are vital for the success of the program
  • Willingness to undergo Police and Working with Children Checks
  • Must be over 18 years of age

Desirable:

  • EALD, ESL or TEFL qualifications or experience
  • Demonstrated experience in building positive relationships with teachers and children
  • Interest in refugee issues
  • Ability to speak a relevant community language, e.g. Arabic, Farsi, Dari, Dinka
