Are you up for the Challenge? - Become a Scout Leader!

Brisbane Central Scout Group are looking for an enthusiastic person to join their Leadership team to support our Scout Troop.

The Scouts section includes boys and girls, aged 10 to 14 years old. The period in scouts often sees much development and growth for our youth members. The Scout section uses the patrol system, where the Patrol leader (a youth about 13-14 years old) oversees their patrol of 5-8 youth. This allows the youth to develop leadership abilities, build resilience, learn respect, organisation, and planning.

The roll of the scout leader is often advisory, with the youth taking on more responsibilities and turning to the leader for guidance when needed. It is most rewarding to see a group of young people under your supervision able to lead themselves and work together toward a common goal with little input from adults.

We currently have 10 youth and 1 adult leader in the Scout section and we are looking to expand our numbers for the coming year.

If you are looking for a new challenge, and feel you could contribute to our community by educating and guiding our Scouts, you may be just the person we are looking for.

Basic requirements for Leaders: • Enthusiastic & High Spirited • Willingness to Learn • Planning for weekly Troop Meetings • Open to embracing all cultural and spiritual backgrounds • Planning and attending regular adventurous outings and overnight camps/sleepovers • Being able to guide youth in a respectful manner that encourages them to feel safe and maintains and re-enforces positive behaviour • Ability to obtain a volunteer Blue Card

The Scout Law, which is the foundation for Australian Scouting, contains three main statements: Be Respectful, Believe in Myself, & Do What is Right. If you identify with our purpose, then a volunteer role as a Scout leader may be perfect for you.

We meet on Tuesday’s from 6:30pm onwards at New Farm State School (during school term only). We also engage in weekend activities (such as camping or hiking) once or twice a school term.

Scout leaders do not need scouting experience; however, it is beneficial. Any experience with youth and the outdoors is also helpful, though we have comprehensive free training (as well as mentors) to support you.

“I have over and over again explained that the purpose of the Boy Scout and Girl Guide Movement is to build men and women as citizens endowed with the three H's namely, Health, Happiness and Helpfulness. The man or woman who succeeds in developing these three attributes has secured the main steps to success in this Life.” – Baden-Powell, Founder of Scouting
