Whitford Library has been running CoderDojo since 2016, and there is an average of 15 - 25 students attending weekly. CoderDojo is a free, fun and social learning environment that inspires young people aged 7 -17 (Ninjas) to learn coding, improve their digital literacy skills and develop individual projects. CoderDojo is popular all over the world, and currently over 100 Dojos exist in WA that are supported by over 110 Champions, 200 Mentors and attended by over 1,700 Ninjas.

Volunteers can grow their experience in mentoring others to develop their digital literacy skills. The clubs are a positive and fun environment to volunteer. The sessions run weekly in school terms and last for one hour. Children bring their own laptops and connect the libraries wifi hotspots. No formal training is provided at the sessions, but recommended resources and activities are available for new ninjas started to code for the first time.

Mentors should have good experience in coding. This is not a place for mentors to learn how to code for themselves for the first time. Many of the children are progressing quickly in their skills and typically need a confident coder to support them when they hit a syntax error.

A Working With Children’s Check is required from mentors, and librarians can help you apply for one.

You can not apply for this role as it is no longer available.
